Rachel Maddow Hosting Race for the White House Today

I just tuned in five minutes late to Air America's The Rachel Maddow Show, which simulcasts MSNBC's Race for the White House in it's first hour, only to hear that Maddow is taking David Gregory's post as moderator today (I missed the explanation for why at the beginning).  This is very interesting, not least because Gregory is one of the front runners to take over Meet the Press.  It also speaks to the increasing inevitability that Maddow will soon get her own show on the network.  Race will be around until November, presubmably.  If Gregory does get MTP, it is possible they'll make her the moderator until then?

The poll questions are courtesy of today's Times.

Re: Rachel Maddow Hosting Race for the White House (none / 0)

I'm actually sorta hoping that Gregory does get MTP, b/c I see there only being at most 4 contenders: Brokaw, Mitchell, Matthews, and Gregory.  Brokaw I don't think would be interested.  Mitchell and Matthews would be horrible.  Which leaves Gregory.

Keith commented at GOS awhile back that people who were thinking of launching a pro-Maddow campaign should be careful, lest the campaign backfire.  He also noted that her success as a guest host of Countdown had not gone unnoticed.

I think pairing Countdown and a Maddow show would create some exciting TV.

Re: Rachel Maddow Hosting Race for the White House (none / 0)

Although I couldn't STAND Gregory on his 6pm show (ie I DVR the other shows and not his)

My main beef was he thought his position was to be contrarian to everyone even when it was painfully obvious.

I think Gregory would do good as a "temp" host of MTP as long as all of his questions are vetted.

Honestly, I had a fantasy of Rachel doing MTP.

I know, she's to leeebral but as a big talk radio fan I have to say she is far from "boots on the ground" talk.  When I listened to her show it was almost 95% analysis.

Anways all good news.

My final vote is Tom Brockaw, or rotating moderators for a year or two then loook for permanent.

What that does give the suits time to test and pick a replacement that could go on for years like Tim did, all the while respecting his passing by keeping him as the last permanent host for a little while longer.
makes sense?

I think that could well be the course of events.

Dang, missed it. (2.00 / 1)

Brian Williams I think has the seniority behind Brokaw.

Olbermann has been fighting to get her her own show for awhile now.  The only problem is that she's as ridiculously left-wing partisan as he is.

Wait, that's bad how? :P

Re: Dang, missed it. (2.00 / 1)

Brian Williams is THE anchor though.  Believe it or not, anchoring MTP would be a step-down.  I doubt he is even being considered...

Gregory would be interesting... I used to listen to the press conferences when he went toe to toe with the administrations lapdogs and even the President.

That said... I think they should do a guest host thing for a while out of respect... no one can really fill that chair.

Re: Dang, missed it. (none / 0)

I actually think Gregory is annoying as hell.  Maybe I am in the minority, but in his new show he acts more like a game show host than an actual political commentator.

Re: Thank God (2.00 / 1)

So do you like Gregory or do you find him as unbearable as I do.

I was so excited when I heard his show announced but was utterly disappointed by it.

If you are a MSNBC fan you should notice that the flow and production of his show was more on CNN's level.

I hope they decided to just do rotating hosts, its too soon for a "permanent" replacement IMO.

Nope, definitely not a compliment on Gregory (none / 0)

If he takes over for Russert, they might as well change the show's name to "Meet The Pillow"

Re: Rachel Maddow Hosting Race for the White House (none / 0)

Gregory isn't good on TV, so I'd say Todd. Seriously, if he wants it.

Re: Rachel Maddow Hosting Race for the White House (none / 0)

I personally like Todd, but he doesn't have much interview experience.  I think it's a very long shot for them to choose him outright.  But if they do a rotating cast and he proves himself in that format, I can see it happening in a year or so.

Re: Rachel Maddow Hosting Race for the White House (2.00 / 3)

Is there any news magazine show that has a woman as its anchor?  The ones I know of - Meet the Press, This Week with George Steph, Face the Nation, The KO Show, Hardball, Race to the White House, Verdict with Dan Abrams, Weekend with Wolf Blitzer, The McLaughlin Group - all have male anchors.

Rachel Maddow definitely deserves her own show.  They should get rid of Dan Abrams and put her in his time slot.

Is there any news magazine show with a racial minority as anchor/host?

I don't like David Gregory, especially after the way he tried to rationalize the press' failure in covering the Iraq War.  I'd try out Andrea Mitchell as MTP anchor and see how she does.

Keith would be great as a tough questioner, but, he'd have to dial back his progressive perspective, and thus we'd lose one of the few liberal voices in the MSM pundit world.

I had a dream (none / 0)

Andrea Mitchell was given the job of hosting MTP.

Re: Rachel Maddow Hosting Race for the White House (none / 0)

I saw just the last half of RFTWH today, and I thought Rachel was great. Pointed questions that actually adressed what the panel was saying, lively banter (she has a great sense of humor), and the savvy, clear-eyed insights I've come to expect from Rachel. I'd love to see her get that job, she seems to have alot of fun in the round-table format, and she's damn good at it. Plus, it'll give us straight guys a chance to moon over her on a daily basis. Backlash be damned, let's start the web campaign!
